In 2007, the North Carolina State Fair saw a record attendance, so Fair officials added another day this year in hopes of not only beating that record, but also in hopes of cashing in.
But a sagging economy could put a damper on things.
Nearly 78,000 people attended the 2008 State Fair in the first two days. Of that, more than 42,000 people visited the Fair on Friday alone, which is a drop of more than 15,000 people from last year.
Raleigh resident Betsy Scholl lost her job recently. Still, she's paying $3 a pop at the water gun ride for a little bit of fun.
"I love the water gun game, so that's what I'm gong to spend my money on," she said. She also said her husband's job provided the extra money needed for the fair.
"My husband's got a good job, and it's time to have some fun," she said.
Officials say they're gearing up for folks like Betsy who are using the Fair as an opportunity to get away from what's on their mind.
"I think people are taking advantage, and coming out to the State Fair," said organizer N.C. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler.
Fair tips include:
- Use shuttles to avoid traffic
- Give kids your cell phone number, and tell them to seek out a Fair official if they get lost
- Bring a jacket.
