What could be a record-breaking crowd packed the State Fairgrounds on Sunday for the North Carolina State Fair’s final day.
Fair officials said they were hoping to make up for an overall drop in attendance during the fair’s run. Last year the fair saw around 858,000 visitors -- an all-time record. This year’s total reached around 663,000 after Saturday, while Sunday’s numbers will not be release until Monday.
Officials, however, hoped Sunday would turn out to be a record attendance for the fair’s final day.
Last year the final day saw around 98,000 visitors, and officials said Sunday’s beautiful weather could help break the final day record.
“We would like to have had 11 days like this. We didn’t but we’ve got it now and I think we’re looking at a really, really good crowd,” said State Fair spokesperson Brian Long.
Some visitors said Sunday was their first and only chance this year to make a stop at the fair and they wanted to take advantage of the opportunity.
“I haven’t been to the fair in about five years so it gives me an opportunity to enjoy the people and just have a good time,” Darryl Lynch said.
“We just do it every year. It’s a traditional thing,” Taurus Chavis said.
Crystal Gordon of Brooklyn, New York said she comes to the fair just to taste the food.
“The turkey legs, the funnel cakes -- it’s worth the money to come all the way from Brooklyn,” she said.
