WILMINGTON, N.C. --

When there's something strange... and it don't look good... who you gonna call? National Society of Paranormal Investigation and Research! Ok, so it doesn't have quite the same ring to it as "Ghostbusters", but that's because that's not what they are. And don't you forget it.

If you know what George Matthis is into before you meet him he'll introduce himself to you for the first time as "Dr. Peter Venkman" but that's about where his jokes about the paranormal end. The head of the NSPIR is quick to point out that he's not crazy. Just crazy about ghosts.

Matthis's group looks for evidence of paranormal activity in and around our area, and they invited us to come along on their latest excursion to the Battleship N.C. in Wilmington. 1 giant abandoned battleship, 4 paranormal experts, 3 NBC17 employees scared out of their wits... 1 night before Halloween... Bring it.

Erica Bustamante, Candice Combs, and I tagged along as the NSPIR crew held Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) monitoring sessions in several well-known paranormal hot-spots in the bowels of the ship. Pretty scary stuff in-and-of itself. Even scarier when you know the history behind the rooms; that at least four sailors died in that part of the ship when a torpedo hit right under the shower room. Not only that, but that some of them may have actually made it out alive had they not been shut in when the doors surrounding their unit were shut down to keep the rest of the ship from flooding. They were left there to die by the very people they lived and worked with everyday. These were not happy ghosts we were looking for.

We did EVP's in the shower room, two officer's quarters, and the library. Some rooms proved more "active" than others, but at least one person and/or instrument felt something in every one.

NSPIR Investigators answers questions sent in by NBC17 viewers.
