Today is the deadline put in place by the NAACP, for NC State University officials to take action against four students who spray painted racist graffiti inside the free expressions tunnel on campus.
The NAACP gave the school a 48 hour request that ends today to take action against the students, or else. But naacp leaders are being tight lipped about what it is they are going to do, if no action is taken.
The writings found last week included a death threat against President-elect Barack Obama. The secret service was called in to investigate and deemed that there was no real threat and campus police have said the students will not be charged with committing a hate crime.
But the NAACP and the student senate are pushing school leaders to take some sort of disciplinary action.
The NAACP had strong words after a nearly two hour meeting behind closed doors with NC State earlier this week.
"Anybody who would write this kind of language is disturbed," said Rev. Dr. William J. II, president of the North Carolina NAACP.
The civil rights group demands the school expel the students, who've been identified but they're names aren't being released.
One student agreed the writings went too far, but believes in the expression tunnel, anything goes.
"Being expelled is a little harsh because this right here is a free expression tunnel," said student Sam Allen, "so you're obviously free to express whatever you want."
Others say they felt threatened by the incident and that they didn't feel comfortable celebrating the day after President-elect Barack Obama's win.
"There are students on this campus that are legitimately afraid. I know all of us can't feel the same way they do right now, but they are legitimately afraid and that sends a message," said student James Hankins.
"How do I not know they're the same student that wrote that sits beside me in class," said another student, Megan Wallace.
The NAACP says the words go beyond the freedom of expression and is pushing for every student to take diversity training in their first year.

I meant what ALLEN WAS SAYING...SORRY

I think what Mitch is trying to say here is what millions of others want to say and have said at one point and time is the NAACP does nothing but cause racial problems that most would pay no attention too. Such a big issue has been stirred up about a few college guys writing a few words, maybe of bad choice for some but yet their feelings at the momment. This has turned into a national newscast and only NC STATE kids will probably ever have passed through that tunnel and most would not have even read it.Funny thing is the same guy that took time to write this may be the one that pats his black team member on the back when he makes a touchdown, or go on in life to be a lawyer to defend one of the other boys one day or a doctor to save his life when he has been shot in a drive by. That is the way our minds work. Our opinions change with the wind,so the NAACP needs to quiet down and let all of us expressing our anger in written words alone and make a change by getting more programs to save these kids that are killing each other and killing other innocent college kids. If African Americans want change they need to start with themselves. I am not speaking for all blacks just as I can't speak for all whites. Yep the NAACP IS MORE THAN LIKELY RESPONSIBLE FOR A LOT OF GANG ACTIVITY IN OUR NATION. JUST LOOK WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO GOOD MINDS HERE WITH SENSIBLE OPINIONS, CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT IT IS DOING TO THOSE ON THE STREET THAT HAVE NO HOPE AND LOADED UP WITH GUNS, weapons, AND DRUGS. As far as getting along I am capable of getting along with anyone and can be a friend to all of you but deep inside I have my own opinion and if I choose it will come out. I feel it is kind of hard to teach our kids not to use some words when you cut the car stereo on and out comes a song with (my bit...ch or you *****), and you have to explain to a 3 year old that you don't say that to them but they can say it to each other. They have talent when they say it to each other but we are racist, funny huh?

Mitch, I just said what millions of people think but afraid to say. I am not polically correct, I tell it like it is. I guess some people think they're morally superior because it's the popular way to think, well those people and others like them are sheep. Your retort lacks everything except your opionion of me. How predictable...

Thanks for your response Alan, You're obviously someone of deep thought and insight.

Mitch, Maybe you are someone who chooses to be a victim. Carrying that cross on your back and whine and moan about how black people are victims. The only difference between you and the NAACP is that they are professional victims furthering on the continuing saga of devisiveness and polarization. They get paid to be victims and the rest of black america embraces it because they get freebies. Affimative action, hiring quota's etc..... It only takes a few radicals from both sides to stir up the debate. A couple stupid kids writing stupid stuff for other stupid people to get offended at. Get a thicker skin folks. I have been called cracker, whitey.....etc and that stuff just rolls off my back and I don't give it second thought because the person saying to me has no credibility. If you chose to be offended then you chose to be a victim enter the NAACP......

Steve, Thanks for your response and for taking the time to add another perspective to this discussion. I think you misunderstood my post. You’re right, I can’t demand empathy and I will never try unless if maybe, I’m blessed with kids. I can, however challenge others AS I CHALLENGE MYSELF to take a moment and try to understand others’ perspectives. Please don’t confuse my questions asked as a demand. I just see a lot of hurt in Pat’s post and I wish she had never had to endure such a negative experience that still stays with her today. It’s a shame that reckless individuals seem to leave the biggest impression or statements. Pat and I would have probably grown to be lifelong friends thus negating the actions of one knucklehead. I was born and raised a North Carolinian and I’m embarrassed at the negative press as this was brought to my attention by a fellow Detroiter. Unfortunately, others look at that act committed by a few and feel that it justifies the stereotype of the “southern White”. I know it doesn’t and I’m just saying to all people of all colors: Let’s not be so quick to say, “You See!” Let’s instead, turn our energy into saying, “Why do you feel this way, and how can we change our negative perceptions?"

Just as I meant , this was one black guy I am talking about above and I never said I had hate for all bc of his color. MY POINT HERE WAS TO LET THE ONES CLAIMING TO BE AFRAID BC OF ONE PERSONS OPINION IS RIDICULOUS. AND IF YOU REALLY DON'T GET IT, WELL YES I HEARD THE BLACK BOY I WAS REFERRING TO SAY ALL THEM WHITE GIRLS THINK WE ARE AFTER THEM, AND SHE JUST COMPLAINED BC I AM BLACK, BUT I CHOSE TO IGNORE, BUT LATER FOUND OUT I HAD GOOD REASON TO BE AFRAID BUT IT WAS NOT BC OF HIS RACE, ALTHOUGH THAT IS HOW HIS FRIENDS(BLACK) MADE IT APPEAR and they have a special program in school for black girls to go to for help and complaints. I have no hate or dislike for any color but I do have disgust for anyone whining bc of their color and I would be willing to bet that those white students parents are paying their own tuition and the majority of the ones complaining are in school on Negroe College funds. If I as a parent and grandparent send my kid to NC State and they were refused to stay in school one day after I PAID FOR THEM BC OF SOMETHING THEY HAD A RIGHT TO DO BY SCHOOL LAWS I WOULD BE FURIOUS. Now, unless there is a real endangerment in what these college kids have done leave it alone, and quit making demands it will be my way or else or NAACP is going to cause real race problems. They are never going to change some peoples minds. SO ALL THIS BRAINWASHING FOR OTHER PEOPLE THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT IS A STUPID WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. We all can make our own choices and if we sometimes make bad ones we have laws that say we have to pay, but in the college students case he did what he was allowed do and where he was allowed to do it, so I say he owes no one. DEMANDING IN 48 hours, lol, if you don't think that is calling for racial injustice to whites then you better think again and I AM SURE OUR PRESIDENT elect WOULD THINK THAT IS FUNNY.I DON'T EVER RECALL ANY CRIMINAL CASE IN HISTORY BEING SOLVED IN 48 HOURS AND THIS IS NOT EVEN A CRIMINAL CASE. Talking about demands, it took me 20 years to see justice done on that boy I REFERRED TO ABOVE's actions and he claimed it was bc he was black then, but I did not care what color he was, it was a sexual offense in todays society so things have changed some for all of us and that would be the things we need to be looking for (changes for all).

Mitch, Pat DIDN'T 'tell others how offended they should be.' Nor would she require anyone else's 'authorization' to tell them so if she wished. Just as YOU have the right to see the world differently from the way others see it, SO DOES SHE. Now, I'm with you when you express the HOPE that more people would empathize with others, but it's not something that you've a right to demand of others, only of yourself. My question to you is this: DO you demand it of yourself on the subject of race relations, OR do you only see motes (real and/or imagined) in the eyes of white folks?
By Mitch on 11/15 08:17 PM
Pat, What authorization do you have to tell others how offended they should be. Did your former principal use that phrase? (...leave it alone and waste your time on real issues) What happened to empathy? Isn't that what you were looking for at one time? People wonder why so many victims of abuse become abusers. Although it may explain, it doesn't justify. I have a suggestion Pat: Join me in seeking solutions to race relations instead of condoning this type of divisive action. You and I (a Black man) can help ensure others don't have to feel the emotional sting that we've both felt in our past. Please?

I sat in school beside a black boy in high school that repeatly made obscene gestures to me and I was always afraid. I went to our assistant principle which was in charge at the time and he was black. I was told to ignore him, don't look at him I was told. I HAD NO ONE TO TAKE UP FOR ME LIKE THE NAACP. Well today this guy is on the sex offenders list for several sexual assaults rapes and by the GRACE OF GOD I AM NOT ONE OF THEM, but many are. He is not behind bars now. So lets at least understand the anger and fear out there goes both ways. Expressing yourself in a tunnel made for that is fine. We all may learn something there if we go to it and read. If there is no sign of a real threat and just an angered expression it is hurting no one but the ones losing sleep over it. Everytime a comment is made we can't punish for it or we will all be in jail, suspended from school or etc. I say leave it alone and waste your time on real issues.
