With recent cold temperatures at night, the Raleigh Rescue Mission houses people overnight. But shelter officials say with homelessness on the rise, resources are low and when they turn people away, they don't even have a coat to give them.
One of the biggest shortages is food. The holidays are coming up and the mission expects to serve about 800 hot meals this Thanksgiving, but with donations low and more people in need, the mission is using up too much food, too fast.
"In terms of loss of jobs, that on top of issues we already deal with in the community with drug abuse and mental health, it's just putting a lot on the agency, in particular the mission that's trying to meet their needs," said Executive Director of Raleigh Rescue Mission, Lynn Daniell.
The mission is also in dire need of coats, jackets, hats and blankets, items people are especially looking for in order to bear the cold nights.
