Wake County Story

After School Program Struggling To Survive

RALEIGH, N.C. -

At Loaves and Fishes in Raleigh, students stay busy after school.

The kids have snacks, do their homework, play outside and do projects together.

"It's just mad fun up here, I mean, even though we do homework we can still be ourselves and talk and stuff, we can talk about anything," said Enloe High School Sophomore Chris Hartsfield.

"It helps me stay focused and stuff, helps me get my mind straight and set at to what I want to do," said Enloe High School Senior Shaquana Barnes.

And if Loaves and Fishes was not an option for the students, many don't know what they'd be doing.

"Probably be at home or watching TV somewhere, or getting in trouble, I don't know, something that's not good for me," said Hartsfield.

For Barnes, she knows this program could be responsible for keeping her out of a gang.

"They probably would have been my role-models, those ones that are like that, because I didn't have anything else positive in my life," she said.

But right now donations are down from every source Loaves and Fishes gets funding from, now they're just trying to figure out what to do to keep kids in the program.

"We've had to make some cuts, some very difficult choices," said Fishes and Loaves Executive Director Susan Duncan.

First on the chopping block is salaries; the staff has taken a pay-cut.

"We know how important each staff person is in the lives of these children, that's what matters, that's what makes Loaves and Fishes, and so it was a really sad time," said Duncan.

But instead of giving up, these folks are going to do what they can to keep these kids on the right path.

"I see it as an opportunity to try to do things differently to reach out to new funding sources to find new ways to raise money, to meet new people to partner with other organizations, "said Duncan.
