On this Thanksgiving eve, two Duke University students who can't wait to get home say they almost didn't make it this year.
"It definitely made my mom second guess whether or not I should come home and how soon we should buy our Christmas tickets and everything like that, because it was just crazy to see the price jump," said sophomore student Jideka Nwosu.
Mom may have bought the tickets, but Jideka says there are others who aren't as fortunate.
"There are a lot of students staying home for Thanksgiving definitely more than last year when I was a freshman," said Nwosu.
On the other side of the ticketing lobby, a father and son were getting ready to fly to spend Thanksgiving in Japan. For him, the extra charge for luggage was hard to swallow.
"You gotta have luggage when you travel and especially when you're traveling with kids all of that extra charges, wow, it's not necessary," said Germaine Benjamin.
It was the same frustration for another family. With a new baby and her parents going along to visit the in-laws this week, Dawn McCoure said traveling during Thanksgiving has never been this expensive.
"It's gone from two bags to three, this year it was five," said McCoure from Goldsboro.
The McCoures said they paid $115 just to get their bags one way from Raleigh to Chicago.
