The Apex Town Council is making changes to the type of businesses that can be built in the business district of town.
The Council voted on Dec. 16 to no longer allow auto repair and maintenance facilities in the neighborhood business district of town because of concerns from residents like noise and pollution.
At Tuesday's meeting, the council voted to grandfather in a AAA Auto Store located on the Apex Peakway. Town leaders said the plans for the site were submitted before the change made at the December meeting.
A lawyer working for developers of the AAA store also created some conditions to lessen the worries of residents. The store developers agreed to build a buffer of trees between the Golders Green Townhome development. They also said that all the auto repairs will be done inside the building and any wastes from the automobiles will be disposed of and not put into floor drains. AAA developers also agreed to construct the building so the auto bays could not be seen by residents who live in the townhomes. The part of the building facing the neighborhood will be aesthetic office space.
Raymond Sanchez is the Vice President of the Homeowners Association for the Golders Green Townhome development. He said he's not satisfied with the decision or the conditions.
"The problem is that they say we'll put in buffers and plant trees. Then, two or three years down the road things don't turn out as proposed. I've see that happen time and time again," Sanchez said.
