With a soaring unemployment rate in North Carolina, people who are out-of-work are turning to experts for tips to stand out to prospective employers.
The Capital Area Joblink Career Center System has seen about a 26 percent increase in traffic in the last few months, and more people are out-of-work for longer periods of time, said Ray Riordan, career counselor.
Riordan led a series of job hunting workshops Wednesday at the Electronic Information Center in downtown Raleigh.
"There is a good chance, if you equip yourself properly, that you can go out and find work," he said.
A group attended an afternoon session to learn how to create resumes that get results.
"In my case, it's gaps in my employment history, and I didn't quite know how to explain that," said Laverne Currie.
"Given my age and my background, resume writing had changed greatly since I wrote my first resume," said Robert Britt, who hasn't been unemployed in decades.
Riordan said to think of your resume like it's a movie trailer-it should show your best attributes in a clear and concise way, and leave your audience wanting more.
"It's tough to capture all that you are in such a small document," he said.
