Schools in Wake County would not face automatic closure if a student was diagnosed with H1N1 (Swine flu) virus. Wake County Health Director Dr. Elizabeth Tilson told school board members Tuesday that the decision would depend on the extent of an outbreak.
"In the beginning it was automatic school closure," said Dr. Betsy Tilson. "Now, with our experience and the reassurance [from the CDC], that is not the case. Even if there were to be a confirmed case in the school, we would not automatically close schools."
Tilson told school board members (see video link above) that news of Wake County's first confirmed case of H1N1 (Swine flu) virus came this week.
"It may be we've had other cases, but this is the first confirmed case that we know about," she said.
Tilson said the flu has been much milder than originally expected, even milder than the regular seasonal flu.
