HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. -

Saturday, June 20 will be a special morning for the Holly Springs Farmers Market at Town Hall in downtown Holly Springs.

Get expert cooking and gardening tips and protect your health and that of your pet while you shop for fresh produce and other items.

Ed Brantley, local chef and last year's runner-up on NBC's hit TV show "The Biggest Loser", will visit the market. He'll conduct free cooking demonstrations at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., using all fresh ingredients from market vendors.

"This will be the second in our Local Celebrity Series," said market coordinator Robin Pfister.

Sabrina Thompson, manager of Bass Lake Park and Retreat Center in Holly Springs, will be on hand to answer gardening questions.

Also June 20, Duke Heart Center will be at the market from 8 a.m. until noon. The heart center will be promoting its "Grillin' and Chillin'" program and offering free heart health screenings. Giveaways and door prizes are part of the promotion.

While you're learning about healthy living at the market on June 20, there's an opportunity to protect your dog or cat as well.

The Holly Springs Police Department will sponsor one of its quarterly low-cost rabies clinics from 9 a.m. until noon in conjunction with Wake County Animal Control. Vaccinate your pet for only $5 in the department parking lot adjacent to the farmers market..

A veterinarian will administer the vaccinations. For booster shots that last three years, show proof that your pet's rabies inoculation is up-to-date. Otherwise, it will receive a one-year vaccination.

At the March rabies clinic, the Police Department ordered 300 doses of vaccine in anticipation of a record turnout.

The Holly Springs Farmers Market is open through October on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. until noon at Town Hall at 128 S. Main St.

The market opened its third season May 2 with more than two dozen vendors offering fruits and vegetables, crafts, and nursery stock as well as all-natural pork products and homemade pasta.

"This is a ‘producers-only' market, meaning that all vendors must make what they are selling," Pfister said. "Most of our vendors are right here in Holly Springs."
