To the 4% who were against medical use of cannabis, please run a search on "Granny Storm Crow's list". The list is an educational experience for doctors, patients, politicians, and especially, you. The range of ailments cannabis can treat (as backed up by scientific studies) is amazing. Read the list- unless you are afraid of the truth! Cannabis IS medicine!
By negrium299 on 06/28 07:23 PM
it needs to be legal instead of alchohol
By Aremon on 06/28 07:06 PM
The way I see it! This is a gift. The government will of course tax the sale of medical use of majuania, the tax revenue can be used to aid in decreasing our national debt.

There is no need, if cannabis is legalized, for there to be an age limit of 21. 18 year olds are legal adults and they are grown men and women, and one being old enough to get married, die in wars, and work full-time should legally be allowed to possess a non-toxic plant.

it is very effective in the medical field they just have to give a chance
By Herban Renewal on 06/23 01:58 PM
Just google for Anslinger's quotes to see what lies and fear tactics were used in the campaign to make cannabis illegal in the first place. Current laws should be repealed because of civil rights violations. (Albeit, there were no civil rights laws to violate at the time.) Look at who backed him and their motivation$ are clear.

Medical cannabis should be legalized nation wide. Currently there are 8 patients nation wide who receive govt. grown and dispensed medical cannabis. It is distributed right here in NC from the research triangle, and is mentioned in both H-1380 and H-1383. Of course our so-called representatives in Washington still get their information from such sources as the CRS, the Congressional Research Service. Last Novemebr a report about medical cannabis has been published and it's author is Mark Eddy, Crime Specialist in the Domestic Social Policy Division! http://wikileaks.org/leak/crs/RL33211.pdf Having a crime specialist author a report on a medical issue is a good example on how our elected representatives inform themselves. It is no wonder that they represent the prison industrial complex, rather than the people of America. Currently over half of the population support legalizing cannabis for adult use. A recent Zogby poll shows that. http://www.salem-news.com/articles/may062009/mj_zogby_5-6-09.php The support for medical cannabis is even higher, and about three quarters of Americans support medical cannabis. 72 percent of respondents agreed with the statement, "Adults should be allowed to legally use marijuana for medical purposes if a physician recommends it." POLL: AARP DATE: November 2004 Sample Size: 1,706 80 percent of respondents supported allowing adults to "legally use marijuana for medical purposes." POLL: Time Magazine/CNN Poll DATE: October 2002 Sample Size: 1,007 70 percent of respondents answered affirmatively to the question, "Should the use of medical marijuana be allowed?" POLL: Center for Substance Abuse Research DATE: January 2002 Sample Size: N/A 73 percent of respondents supported allowing doctors "to prescribe marijuana." POLL: Pew Research Center Poll DATE: March 2001 Sample Size: 1,513 There is a lot of info available at the following places: http://norml.org/ http://www.mpp.org/ http://www.leap.cc/cms/index.php http://busgreg.info/

What Science Tells Us: 1. Cannabis Is NOT a Drug! 2. Cannabis is NOT Physically Addicting. 3. Cannabis is NOT a Gateway Drug. 4. Smoked Cannabis (tho they tried to make it so) Does NOT cause Cancer, it actually Protects Cells from mutation. 5. Cannabis is an Efficacious Herbal Alternative Medicine. Stop Lying About Cannabis! The DEA's ALJ Francis L. Young says: " 4. Nearly all medicines have toxic, potentially lethal effects. But marijuana is not such a substance. There is no record in the extensive medical literature describing a proven, documented cannabis-induced fatality. - 56 - 5. This is a remarkable statement. First, the record on marijuana encompasses 5,000 years of human experience. Second, marijuana is now used daily by enormous numbers of people throughout the world. Estimates suggest that from twenty million to fifty million Americans routinely, albeit illegally, smoke marijuana without the benefit of direct medical supervision. Yet, despite this long history of use and the xtraordinarily high numbers of social smokers, there are simply no credible medical reports to suggest that consuming marijuana has caused a single death. 6. By contrast aspirin, a commonly used, over-the-counter medicine, causes hundreds of deaths each year. 7. Drugs used in medicine are routinely given what is called an LD-50. The LD-50 rating indicates at what dosage fifty percent of test animals receiving a drug will die as a result of drug induced toxicity. A number of researchers have attempted to determine marijuana's LD-50 rating in test animals, without success. Simply stated, researchers have been unable to give animals enough marijuana to induce death. 8. At present it is estimated that marijuana's LD-50 is around 1:20,000 or 1:40,000. In layman terms this means that in order to induce death a marijuana smoker would have to consume 20,000 to 40,000 times as much marijuana as is contained in one marijuana cigarette. NIDA-supplied marijuana cigarettes weigh approximately .9 grams. A smoker would theoretically have to consume nearly 1,500 pounds of marijuana within about fifteen minutes to induce a lethal response. 9. In practical terms, marijuana cannot induce a lethal response as a result of drug-related toxicity." http://www.druglibrary.org/Schaffer/LIBRARY/studies/YOUNG/young4.html DE-Schedule Cannabis!"
By Sober Says Legalize, Regulate, Educate, Tax Pot on 06/22 03:45 PM
I don’t even smoke. But legalize it, tax it, and focus on REAL PROBLEMS like cocaine and meth. Pot is not the issue. Prohibition and closed minds are the issue. The same people who say no, were probably drinking at last night at bars across the US… Hypocrites. How strange it is that every other commercial during a sports game is for beer, and how people at work talk about how they went to a party and got drunk and yet my friends that casually smoke can’t say they stayed home, smoked a little, and watched a movie. Just treat it like alcohol. I don’t get when people say they are worried about kids. If treated like alcohol, as the post says above, they won’t be able to get it. The “what about the children” argument makes no sense. Finally, the US can make tons of money if they tax it.
By ronnie on 06/21 03:40 PM
I think all of you who think the marijuana laws are stupid, should look to the Senators and Representatives who represent you, and vote them out. As long as they feel protected because they are Democrats or Republicans, and as long as we pull the lever with their names on it there will be no change. There are about3 people in Raleigh who control everything. Start by getting rid of them.
By Legal Lion on 06/21 03:00 PM
Florida pot laws are some of the most strict in the nation still. and unfortunately i have to experience them for myself. other than pot, i'd never give a reason to be treated like a criminal... peaceful and otherwise law abiding, educated and hard working. now i have another bill to pay courtesy of the Florida law system, as if it weren't hard enough to pay my bills...now i have the threat of jail looming if i cant pay this probation. its really ALL about the money flowing through the JUST-US IN THE SYSTEM. F@CK THAT!

Hemp would save our planet and help alot of our problems here in the US of america, all that aside medical marijuana is not only helping the sick but the familys who care for them. Legalize and free all our people in prison for crimes aginst no one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By Nicholus Pierce on 06/21 01:54 PM
for thirty plus years, smokers have been fighting in peaceful protest, and winning scientific debate against ridiculous marijuana laws, just read some of these comments and youll find dozens of perfectly rational examples of the good legalizing (for medical or otherwise)cannabis can do for our nation......it has gotten to the point where enough people know the truth, and the failure of our government to fall in step with the people on this issue, is an undeniable loooong standing example of our lawmakers corruption, inadequacy, incompetence, and justification for removal....... this is like the 20th online poll, including the change .org issues polls , that obama said he would use to consider policy making....that has consistently shown percentiles in the high 90s ...of people in favor of legalization.... we still live in a democracy dont we?... benefits: cutting crime,(especially along our border) emptying prisons,(cutting millions of tax dollars wasted) safe access,(for medical needs, research, and can be regulated over 21 like alchohol) job production,(hundreds of thousands of new jobs right away, millions eventually, safe green jobs) billions in taxes collected,(guaranteed to be the next big billion dollar industry, can do for the 2000's like the internet boom did for the 90's) less government interference in personal choice, can be grown and therefore benefited from in every state of the union, all the wonderful products made from hemp which can cutback on our importation of foreign goods and exportation of our wealth,(textiles, biodegradable plastics, thousands of products,) bio-fuels (cannabis is perfect for creation of ethanol, stop using foods for fuel) LAWS AGAINST MARIJUANA ARE NOT ONLY FOOLISH, UNCONSTITUTIONAL, CORRUPT , BUT SO ARE THE LAWMAKERS THAT UPHOLD THEM
By scottportraits on 06/21 01:48 PM
Yes. YES. Do it for the sick and dying....it's good medicine, and a shame to deny it to those who would benefit most.
By Colleen on 06/21 12:38 PM
So where are the comments from the 6% that voted no, seems in my travels that those that say no are grossly undereducated and any reasonable compassionate person would see the issues for what it is. So i challenge that six percent, why haven't you commented? you obviously think that taking away people's freedom and locking them in a cage with violent criminals is an appropriate action for those who use evil cannabis. You would think they would be voicing their opinion here i mean locking someone in a cage for years is a pretty big commitment to an ideology...

When will all these so-called religious people stop claiming that God screwed up when He created the psychoactive substances and conspired with Mother Nature to make them ubiquitous, and provided humanity with anatomy that is sensitive to them and causes people who try them to want to do it again?
By Galen on 06/21 03:17 AM
We all know the only reason marijuana is illegal is because of Dupont and hurst wanting to save their petro chemical and wood production businesses. These two men knew that hemp could produce the products they made cleaner, and more readily than their products. Then you have the fact that they make a fortune out of the prison rackett that they have going on. The reason they do not want to legalize marijuana is too many corrupt polticiains, police officers, judges, border patrol, dea and other law enforcement agencies that make money off the illegal trade of marijuana. This plant is safer than aspirin, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and definately safer than any pharmaceutical garbage.
By Moonvomit on 06/21 03:13 AM
How would you feel if you were dying of cancer and not only did they deny you of your medicine, but they toss you in federal PRISON (rape camp) or what if your family members were put away for the rest of the years for doing nothing more than smoking a plant? Who are you hurting but yourself (if that)? If marijuana is illegal to protect us, why can i buy a 4000 calorie meal deep fried in fat for 99 cents?
By krisshan kant sundriyal on 06/20 03:14 AM
Hi, its high time that Govts all over the world should legalise Marijuana.I am from India where there is no dearth of Marijuana.
By Mark Montgomery on 06/20 02:11 AM
I LOVE these stories because they drive home the point that all over the USA there are thousands and thousands of tons of pot being grown, transported, sold and smoked and there's NOTHING the cops can do about it, they don't even catch 5%. Pot should be legal. Mexico just legalized possession of small amounts of all drugs. Switzerland just legalized heroin. Portugal decriminalized all drugs in 2001 and their experience has been positive. Now if you are caught with a 10 day supply of your drug or less you face an administrative court, not a criminal court, but in practice they are just not arresting people. A group of 10,000 very serious policemen, prosecutors, attorneys and citizens have formed a group to legalize ALL drugs, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (http://leap.cc ) They see what happened when we legalized alcohol in 1932 as a good example of how drug legalization would work. This foolish war on drugs has lasted 37 years and cost us over a TRILLION dollars and we are not an inch closer to stopping drugs. How many millions of Americans are we going to lock up in prison for decades? Mark Montgomery boboberg@nyc.rr.com
By Dave in NH on 06/19 10:20 PM
Need to get the story correct. RI legalized medical marijuana back in 2006. They only now made it legal for 3 compassion centers "non-profit" to manufacture, label and dispense the marijuana. This avoids having someone that is terribly ill from getting taking advantage of by some underground thug selling on a street corner. I know people that have been self medicated for over 30 years and I could write a documentary along with I am sure millions of other people that have seen the same positive side of it all. Oh yeh but the FDA is not sure if it is safe for consumption yet but the lead toys my 3 year gets from china are okay! Pot used for thousands of years over 100's of generations and there is still not one known death documented from toxicity "using too much". Aspirin has over 500 deaths a year alond in the US and this has been approved to be safe for a long time. Al Capone only had like 100 people running a liquor bootleg business and now we have the Mexican mafia ready to recruit 12 million or so undocumented people to help with dispensing illegal drugs for their own profit. Time to cut the pipeline and reap the profits ourselves. I also have a feeling that a non citizen ends up having more rights getting caught then natural born citizen. Just some things to thing about.
By TYC on 06/19 06:29 PM
Law Enforcement has used drug laws to push their way into people lives in ways never intended by the Constitution. A patient and a doctor should not be separated by a cop or a law. Drug laws were meant to protect citizens from the dangers associated with addiction not from drugs themselves. However, drug laws have become a serious addiction with law enforcement.
By Michael on 06/19 05:04 PM
"Medical" anything is an issue for doctors and patients...not lawmakers. Let the doctors decide which medicines (if any) are appropriate for their patients. Sick people should not face arrest, prosecution and incarceration for following their doctor's recommendations.
By ddd patient on 06/19 04:34 PM
Yes! By not legalizing marijuana for "at least" medical purposes is an insult to all patients who may find some relief from cannabis. Hello UNC Med Center... Duke Med Center... time to catch up to Stanford Med Center, UCSF Med Center, Loma Linda Med Center, etc... and go to bat for the patients. But frankly, it's simply an incredible waste of taxpayers money and law enforcers time to pursue the current prohibition laws and the perpetuation of lies to an increasingly "educated" public. I also truely wish the clowns on the "idiot o' logical" side of the argument would wake up, smell the herb, and realize the facts.... this harmless plant was put here by God for the benefit of man! So please... hush yer idiot o' logical flappers!
By Nunyabiz on 06/19 10:45 AM
Absolutely should be legalized and not just medically. marijuana is one of the safest drugs there is, safer than aspirin. The only reason it was outlawed in the first place was because of William Randolf Hurst that started a BS campaign to stop the production of "Hemp" that was going to take the place of wood for paper and he had just bought millions of acres of wood land to use in his paper mills. It probably would have bankrupted him. pot never should have been illegal in the first place and certainly not Hemp. hemp production could save American farmers
By Been fighting the good fight for 13 years on 06/19 09:08 AM
There is no debate, how many other medicines have this much political influence? If it eases peoples pain(which it obviously does) that is good for society.
By Sober dude says legalize it on 06/19 12:26 AM
Legalize, tax it, educate, end violence and underground black market, cripple drug cartels, treat it like alcohol.

From a person who suffers from a SEVERE stomach condition caused by a life long battle with Juvenile Diabetes, I think that marijuana should be legalized because without it, I would be in the hospital constantly. Chronic nausea, vomiting, & excruciating pain that causes rapid dehydration versus marijuana that calms the entire process & makes life manageable. Which would you choose if you had to? Sometimes, people don't have a choice they just have to do.
By fred on 06/18 05:04 PM
Works in California and even Massachussetts has chose to decriminalize… IS NC that far behind the rest of the US?
By End the Prohibition on 06/18 03:17 PM
YES. We've tried prohibition and it hasn't worked. Seventy years is long enough! Legalize marijuana's production and sale to adults, with after-tax prices set too low for dealers to match. RESULT: No dealers, no easy access to marijuana by children, no cartel murders. Legalize it!
By plumtexasgirl on 06/18 01:53 PM
Definitely should be. Hell, they should just legalize marijuana anyway. Out of all the people I know-both young, mid-life, and old-I would say 75% of them smoke already. I personally don't, but that's a personal choice, and it doesn't bother me that they do. I do realize that we are talking about medical marijuana being legalized only, but just think of all the tax dollars that would be made! Plus, the usage would be controlled. I don't know about everyone else, but I would MUCH rather be around stoned people than drunk people.
