Cary Neighborhood Holds “Light For Life” Rally

CARY, N.C. -

Cary residents on Thursday remembered a teenage girl killed in a deadly hit and run accident -- while simultaneously calling for change.

Kailee Birdsong died Monday after being thrown from her stepmother's SUV in a crash.

No arrests have been made, as police continue to search for the tan or beige van believed to be involved with the wreck.

Residents say the area around the intersection of Green Level to Durham Road and Cary Glen Boulevard is dangerous, and they turned out in force to make that point.

Some 250 men, women and children completely took over the intersection Thursday afternoon.

"Oh it's terrible. It's been a big concern ever since we moved in," said Ken Dockser, who added that he doesn't let his children cross that intersection without an adult.

"I think I'm a bit scared of it because I see all these cars coming by pretty fast," said Cole Cadman. "And there's no stop-light to know when another car is going to zoom in front of you."

The goal of the community walk was to try to encourage the powers-that-be to put in a traffic light.

Federal guidelines that the state and Town of Cary both use, though, say the intersection doesn't quite meet the standards for one.

"Somebody died here. I think that's more than enough," said Maureen Leboeuf. "I don't think we need another handful of accidents before a red light gets put in here."

"I saw that one crash and I was really devastated by that," said Cadman.

Supporters signed a petition along with hundreds of letters to elected officials at the town, state and federal level.

Kailee's father, Robby Birdsong, said he supported the rally, but could not attend because the wake for his daughter started at the same time in Rockingham.

Before heading out of town, though, Birdsong left an open letter to the driver of the missing van at the makeshift memorial to Kailee that's been set up near the intersection.

Her funeral is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday in Hamlet, North Carolina.
