The town of Apex didn't make the grade when it comes to providing information about government workings, according to a study by the John Locke Foundation.
Local municipalities, government agencies and school districts were graded on whether or not they had certain documents available online, such as the names of employees making more than $50,000 a year, budget documents and other important spending information.
Apex had only four of the 14 documents posted somewhere on their Web site or on other online sources. Foundation members said their goal is to get more citizens informed about where their tax dollars are going. They also have a Web site where towns' can provide them with information to post.
Despite the Foundation's review of his town, Apex Mayor Keith Weatherly said the Internet is filled with different information citizens will find useful.
"John Locke does good work on making the government more accountable to its citizens, but I find fault with the documents that they find important," Weatherly said.
Joe Coletti with the John Locke Foundation said they hope to help the groups improve their scores, in order to get the citizens more informed.
"Make your operations transparent so that as citizens, taxpayers and voters we know what you're doing and can make decisions," Coletti said.
Weatherly said that all the information is available to the public by request through an easy process. But he said they will review what is online and make improvements as they see fit.
