The first day of school always brings a mixture of excitement and anxiety, but for students at three of Wake County's year-round schools, it also brought a new location. At Herbert Akins Road Elementary in Holly Springs, students seemed to be making a smooth adjustment.
Parent Demetrice Anderson has a second grader who was reassigned from Holly Grove.
"I really didn't like it, I wanted her to stay where she was at," he said. "But I see she had a lot of her classmates in her class, so I guess I'm fine with it now."
Third grader Taylor Lawson was ready to get to work. As one of the first students at Holly Grove, he's marking his second brand new school.
"When they told us they were transferring him, I think most of the kids in his class were transferring too," said Tabitha Lawson. "So he should be in class with a bunch of the same kids."
The first day at a new school also brought new experiences. Brenda Shepard's first grader rode the school bus for the first time, but she came to school anyway.
"He said it was uneventful," she said. "They just took a ride through the country and came to school."
Herbert Akins is the largest of the new schools and will have more than 650 students by the end of the month when all four tracks are in session. Banks Road Elementary in Raleigh and Lake Myra Elementary School in Wendell also opened Tuesday.
