This school year, the teachers of Lynn Road were given the opportunity to chose a new special for their students to enjoy. After much debate, the staff decided that Science was something that was important for the education of all students, but who would teach it. Second year teacher Jessica Pike stepped up to the challenge. She states, “that science is very important to the development of our students and is something that is not able to be stressed enough in the classroom. Through this special time, she is able to supplement what the classroom teachers are covering in their course of study and allow the students to participate in more hands on activities. “ The students have participated in many great activities this year. Kindergarteners have explored their five senses by smearing shaving cream all over the tables and making clean mud. First graders have discovered ideas about balance and motion by balancing objects on a balance and their heads. Second graders have done experiments to futher their understanding of solids, liquids, and gases by mixing alka-seltzer and water in a film canister and seeing what happens. The third graders at Lynn Road planted plants and are enjoying studying the life cycle of plants as they watch their seeds grow a little each day. Half of the fourth grade is discovering different concepts of magnetism and electricity by making compasses and electromagnets while the other half is studying rocks and minerals by breaking apart "mock rocks." Fifth graders are studying habitats and ecosystems. They have just finished a research project on an animal's habitat. Ms. Pike is looking forward to developing the program to meet the needs of the students
