Wake County Story

Public Meeting Held In Cary To Discuss Annexation

CARY, N.C. -

The Town of Cary has an unflattering reputation of annexing neighborhoods into the town limits without consent.

Now, the town wants to do it again.

The latest plan stretches from near RDU International Airport all the way to the Southern part of the town along Holly Springs Road.

It involves 162 homes.

Town officials held the first of two open houses Tuesday night.

A little bit of both sides showed up: some folks say they can't wait to have their property in the town limits, others have been fighting it for years.

People who turn off Harrison Avenue onto Richard Road literally come to the end of the line.

The Wake County neighborhood is an island in the middle of Cary.

It and nine others might become part of the town just six months from now, though.

"Yes, our property taxes are going up, but I think we're actually getting value for it," said Mavis Maynard, whose property is up for annexation. "We're getting police protection, fire protection, and eventually water and sewer."

Maynard and some other property owners say they're looking forward to the changes.

Others; not so much.

"We don't want it because we don't need it," said Arlene Burke another property owner whose house is up for annexation. "Cary's already measuring off behind our house, and they have people putting flags in our yard. It's going on whether we want it or not."

The town's take is that these properties are surrounded by Cary, or at least adjacent to it, and the people who live there benefit from Cary's roads, parks and other perks without helping pay for it.

"More equity between those property owners and Cary tax-payers," said Associate Planning Director Ricky Barker.

People who missed Tuesday's open house have another chance at 5 p.m. Wednesday, at the Herbert C. Young Community Center.

Once they get input from people Tuesday and Wednesday's meetings, the town council will have a public hearing on February 12th.

If council members approve the plans, the neighborhoods will be part of Cary by July.

Hmm, WRAL does a story on how residents don't want to be annexed but NBC17 makes it appear like a lot of people want to be annexed. There's a reason why WRAL is the most popular local news - they take the time to get their facts straight.

You can fight this annexation. http://www.stopncannexation.com/ http://olcafa.org/ write your congressmen, organize. there is a committee studying forced annexation laws. on jan. 22, they will be meeting in raleigh. go to the legislative meeting. make a difference or you will be a victim. join other communities in n.c.
