A former Holly Springs police officer is on the other side of the law, after being jailed on counterfeiting charges.

Bruce Green, 29, was forced to resign from the Holly Springs police department as a result of the charges. The two year veteran was also a school resource officer at Holly Ridge Middle School.

The arrest occurred in Raleigh after police there took Green into custody following an investigation which began August 5.

"I just became aware of it last night," said Holly Springs Police Chief John Herring.

Raleigh police say Green was picked up after someone else tried to pass the fake money, and the source of the counterfeit bills was traced back to Green.

"My initial reaction; I was disturbed and disappointed to hear that about any member of the Holly Springs police department," said Chief Herring.

Green was back in his Raleigh home Tuesday night after making bail. A man claiming to be his pastor told NBC17 that Green was not doing any interviews.

Green had been a police officer in Holly Springs since April of 2006 before resigning in the wake of the charges.

"The charges involve one former who was off duty in another town, so we don't look at it as affecting our department except that we now have a vacancy that has to be filled," said Holly Springs spokesman Mark Andrews.

The Secret Service tells NBC17 its joint probe with Raleigh police continues. The agency will also look at the possibility of presenting the case to the U.S. Attorney to see if federal charges are warranted.

The Secret Service also says it is "trying to piece together information" to see if others were also involved, who need to be charged.
