CARY, N.C. -

Cary town leaders said they have been doing their part to keep the area clean, but now they're taking things a bit further.

"It's a broad citizen volunteer program that the town wants to act as a central location where we can put interested citizens with projects to do," Cary Public Works Director Mike Bajorek said.

That program is called "Clean and Green Cary" and Bajorek said it's more than just picking up trash. He said it's about beautification of the community. Just for example, residents will plant flowers and clean areas after storm along with many other important duties.

The Cary Town Council already budgeted for a volunteer coordinator to head this project. Although plans are still in the works, volunteer recruitment is in full swing. Nancy Kimsey got her church involved with the effort and said it gives citizens pride and ownership of the area.

"When you do get involved you feel like you are part of that area a little more. You feel connected to it and you want to keep it looking great," Kimsey said.

From planting flowers at parks in Cary to getting rid of trash at the curb, Bajorek said anyone can help out.

Areas like the beginning of Black Creek Trail that Bajorek said gets hit with graffiti on a regular basis is just an example of an area that he hopes people will adopt and spearhead a cleanup effort when needed.

"I think most people already want to get involved, but they don't have the opportunity," Kimsey said.

Now those people have their chance and Bajorek hopes many volunteers will stand up and take the next step in making a cleaner and greener Cary.

The first official event for the "Clean and Green Cary" program will take place on Sept. 27. Volunteers will be picking up trash on three roads in town.
