The town of Holly Springs is seeking input on plans for a new hospital.
A public forum will be held at 6:30 p.m. tonight, at the cultural center. The company, Novant Health, is proposing a 41 bed facility in the town. They will be at the forum to present information and answer any questions.
But while Novant is busy pushing for support, two other hospitals in the area say not so fast. WakeMed and Rex Hospitals are giving good reasons why they should have them instead.
For people in Holly Springs, especially the elderly, a hospital in town would be convenient.
"I'm getting older and if there's an emergency I don't want to drive a half an hour or three quarters of an hour in an ambulance," said resident Tessie Coogan. "I think its great right in our town," she said.
But with more than 6,700 baby deliveries so far this year, Rex Hospital officials say they should get the beds. Rex wants, 15 beds for general use, and 26 as additional maternity beds on its Raleigh campus.
"We deliver about a kindergarten class of babies a day, a full kindergarten class a day in this one place," said Rex Spokesperson, Melody Hunter Pillion. "And that's just on average, last week, we saw one day when we delivered 41 babies in a 24 hour period," she said.
More babies are also a big reason why WakeMed wants the beds for themselves. They want to build the county's first hospital dedicated to women which would be built at their campus off Falls Of Neuse Road.
"We believe it's going to offer something new and innovative to the market. Also something that's needed," said Stan Taylor, WakeMed.
And while new maternity additions could come as a big help if the state grants the beds to Novant, the hospital would be built near the intersection of Ralph Stephens Road and Highway-55.
More than 200 people would work in the hospital, making it the second largest employer in the town.
If given the go ahead by Holly Springs leaders, Novant Health will file for state approval on August 15, and the hospital would have an expected opening date of July 2012.
