Visitors to Raleigh's Pullen Park could someday take a ride on a Ferris wheel.
City Council voted Tuesday to move forward with studying adding a Ferris wheel to the park near shelter #5, between Adaba Drive and the railroad tracks.
But there are numerous issues the City has to deal with before adding the ride, and City Manager Russell Allen said he is recommending the City not move forward with the idea.
Allen said no funding is designated for this project in the City's Capital Improvement Program.
The City said the ride would cost $1.5 million to purchase and install, and that cost does not include clearing the land and setting up utilities needed for the ride.
The City also said the Ferris wheel could cost about $83,000 each year to operate, which includes paying two ride operators and a full-time ride mechanic.
The City said the proposed site for the Ferris wheel is also the proposed location of the new Pullen Community Center, as detailed in the City's Master Plan for the park.
Mayor Charles Meeker said Tuesday the City could look at rewriting the plan to include the Ferris wheel.
