Wake County Story

Holly Springs Parents Taking On Reassignment

Credit: AP Online
HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. -

Parents living along Ballantine Street in Holly Springs are being encouraged to fight the Wake County Schools plan to reassign more than 350 children to a new school in Fuquay-Varina.
121 students from Holly Ridge Elementary and 248 students from Holly Grove Elementary are being moved to help fill up the new Herbert Akins Road Elementary school. Both of the current schools are at or near capacity. The new elementary school is on a year-round calendar. Every elementary school in Holly Springs is being affected by this latest round of changes. Middle school students will be affected next year when Holly Grove Middle School is ready to open its door.
Signs have gone up around Ballantine Street encouraging parents to attend Thursday's reassignment meeting at Holly Springs High School. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. The sign also encourages parents to wear orange or purple.
The reassignment meeting gives parents to chance to hear from the school system about the reassignment plan and voice concerns. The district's Growth and Planning Department has until December 16th to tweak the current plan before sending it to the school board.
Parents can also go online and leave a comment. The deadline to comment online is December 10.
