Local groups kept a close eye Saturday on the healthcare debate taking place in Washington, D.C.
Americans for Prosperity has been outspoken against the bill, which looks to cover 36 million more Americans at a cost of $1.2 trillion.
The group said the bill being debated doesn't do enough to bring down costs of the nation's healthcare system.
"This 2,000 page bill does not really address cost," said Chris Farr, with Americans for Prosperity North Carolina. "There are so many things that could be done instead of throwing out our whole healthcare system."
Farr also said the bill would hurt private insurers who would not be able to compete with a less expensive, government-run insurance option.
The bill proposes a marketplace where private insurers compete with government-backed plans.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina CEO Bob Greczyn released an internet statement that said new fees on insurers will result in higher premium costs for consumers.
"We don't need more government intervention in the insurance business, and we certainly don't need new taxes that make healthcare more expensive," he said.
The AARP recently endorsed the plan, saying it helps make coverage affordable for Americans both young and old.
"That's what this is about, providing adequate, strong, affordable coverage for everybody in the country," said Bob Jackson, with AARP North Carolina.
Jackson said the plan also protects Medicare and forces insurers not to deny coverage because of preexisting conditions.
The NAACP held a rally in support of the healthcare bill on Thursday, saying it will help get coverage to many Americans who now can't afford it.
"To wonder or not if you're going to go bankrupt if someone in your family gets sick, is a worry that we don't have to have our brothers and sisters facing in this country," said North Carolina NAACP President Rev. William Barber.

Bill F. I hope you are not insinuating that the Health care cost of $15,000 is Obama's fault?.......If not for Congress at least trying to do something the health care cost will go up by another 30% by 2016..............Most people right now, average family cost for Health care is $13,000+ per year.............The problem is they are not doing enough and the reason they are not doing enough is 2 fold......First we have blue dawg democrats that are ignorant and bought and paid for by insurance companies, second we have rethuglicans that are clearly bought and paid for by insurance companies that are fighting tooth and nail FOR those companies not US...... They are fighting FOR the top 2% in this country and sadly the ignorant Tea bagger crowd has been brain washed into doing the same thing for free.............So what little can be passed through Congress will be so watered down BY THOSE 2 GROUPS that it will probably be about worthless.................What should be passed is a Universal Health care for all bill, that is the only real reform that will really work, anything less is just a give away to Insurance companies and it may help a very few people here & there.....

The CBO sent the democrats a letter on Nov 2 stating that the cost of the "basic" health insurance plan will be $15,000 a year in 2016 after Obama's term is up.

The bill is not perfect from what I've read of it. But I can guarantee you I've read more of it than our elected officials. One key point - The industry would also lose its exemption from federal antitrust restrictions on price fixing and market allocation. People really don't realize that they are paying for insurance but are subject to corporate profits as to whether their insurance actually will pay for treatments. You are most likely not covered as well as you think.
