For the second straight year, Thales Academy Apex http://www.thalesacademy.org worked with Operation Homefront http://www.operationhomefront.net to make Shoeboxes for Soldiers for U.S. service members overseas. On the day after Veterans’ Day, Thales Academy students gathered for a presentation of the boxes with Sarah Kanady of Operation Homefront of North Carolina and two local uniformed service members, Army Major Courtney Jones and Marine Master Sergeant Kurtis Voss. “This year, our students and their families donated enough toiletries, reading material, nonperishable food, games and other items to fill 106 shoeboxes, more than double our total from last year,” said Thales Headmistress Hilary Hillman. “We are honored to send this gesture of support for our troops and the service they provide to our country.”The Shoeboxes for Soldiers drive was Thales Apex’s 2009 fall community service project. Funds were also donated to cover the cost of shipping the boxes overseas.Photo caption, L to R: Master Sergeant Kurtis Voss, Operation Homefront NC Director of Program Services Sarah Kanady, Major Courtney Jones, and Thales Academy student Ivy Jones stand with boxes assembled by Thales Academy students for the Shoeboxes for Soldiers program.
