Cheers rang out the Apex Town Council meeting Tuesday after the board approved for the town manager to go forward with pursuing solutions to the parking problem.
Downtown business owners have been concerned with the lack of parking spaces for their customers after construction began on the new police department. The department moved into mobile units that were placed in a parking lots, taking up many spaces.
By working with the business owners, the town proposed numerous options that will provide more than 100 parking spots. The plan will cost the town about $219,000 from the general fund -- not budgeted money.
The solutions include:
•placing gravel in the parking lot adjacent to the CSX railroad building on the East side of the 100 block of Salem Street
•paving the area along Seaboard street, providing 33 to 40 spaces
•allowing parking in front of the 200 block of Salem Street
•installing several bike racks in town
•restriping pavement in the Apex Chamber, adding a handful of parking spaces.
Town Manager Bruce Radford said there are a few more ideas in the works.
Business owners who attended the meeting said they are relieved and want to see the project carried out as soon as possible.

Hip Hip Hooooray !!!!.... The parking problem is solved!Hold on,lets really think about this. The plan the town is proceeding with was implemented because it would save the town $175,000 dollars. The plan will onlycost $219,000 thousand! I repeat $219,000!!! Now you can look at this two ways, either your $175,000 savings is gone plus add on an extra $44,000,or they saved you $175,000 but spent $219,000 dollars out of the general fund!Either way you look at it,the beast of poor planning has reared its ugly head to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars, and think what you will, but the problem is not solved! These "projects" will take 60 to 90 days, completely missing the holiday season, which is the most important time for downtown merchants and shoppers! You also might want to request a map because these "new lots" are spread all over Gods Green Apex!So there you have it,government planning and spending at it's finest!Every resident of Apex should be appauled at the manner in which this has been handled!!!!

Oh, and BIG kudos to NBC 17 for NOT just looking for the negative! Their commitment to reporting GOOD news, and not following the "if it bleeds, it sells" approach of the others is truly commendable!
