Each Tuesday, Jane Dunbar spends her lunch hour with a group of friends. But they aren't eating.
They spend the hour cheering each other and encouraging each other through losing weight as part of a unique Weight Watchers at Work program that includes participants from several different companies and agencies on Raleigh's Centennial Campus.
"We got our time set up with a leader, put the word out, and recruited about 50 people back in January," said Sue Cross of Centennial Campus Partnership.
It came just in time for Jane, who had decided she was ready to get rid of extra weight she had gained after having children. Over 15 years, she had tried a lot of diets, even the diet drug phen-fen, popular in the 90s, that was later pulled off the market because of health concerns..
"That worked like a charm for me," said Dunbar. "I didn't have any side effects, but I didn't learn to eat any differently. I just didn't have an appetite. So as soon as I stopped taking the medicine, the weight came back on."
This time, she was able to stick to her plan. In ten months, Dunbar has lost almost 60 pounds. The key, she said, is setting small goals and achieving them.
"Even just losing the 10 percent (of body weight), you're going to have benefits with your health and all other kinds of things," she said. "But once you get to that 10 percent, you're like, wow, now I can set a goal that now will seem achievable."
One of Dunbar's goals was exercise. She started walking a few months into her weight loss. Now, she is walking or running an hour every day, counting her points spent on food and earned for exercise. She's about 14 pounds away from her goal weight...
"It doesn't seem unreachable now," she said. "It used to seem like, I'm never going to get there."
But she is. Each week, she gets a few pounds closer.
