On the two year anniversary of the murder of a pregnant mother, her family speaks up to remind the public that the case is still active.
Jenna Nielsen was 22-years-old and 8 ½ months pregnant when she was murdered outside a gas station convenience store in Raleigh while delivering USA TODAY newspapers on June 14, 2007.
Police said she was stabbed in the neck but her purse and car keys were left intact in her vehicle.
Since that time, thousands of tips have been checked out and scores of people have been interviewed but there have been no arrests or suspects named in the case.
Despite that, her family believes police are very close to a solution.
“In reality, we are one phone call away from this being solved. Somebody has to drop the dime,” said Kevin Blaine, Jenna’s father.
“This guy who did this needs to be put behind bars,” contends Blaine. “He shouldn’t be allowed to walk free amongst us right now. It’s just wrong.”
Although it’s been two years since her murder, it’s still as priority for investigators with police spokesperson Laura Hourigan saying, “This is not a cold case. We work on this case daily.”
Jenna’s dad says they've had their hope raised several times that Jenna’s killer had been found.
“They thought a couple of times they had the guy. He matched the description; they could put him here at the murder. They thought they had it, but then, some piece of evidence isn’t there,” said Blaine.
Investigators also admit to having DNA, but have been unable to match it to anyone yet.
As he stood in his living room, looking at mementos of happier times, Jenna’s dad lives for the day when the pain of not knowing will be eased.
“It’s been really rough,” he said. “I don’t wish this upon anyone to go through something like this.”
After Jenna was killed, the family put together a $15,000 reward.
Today, that offer still stands and Kevin Blaine says he has no problem awarding it to an anonymous person, so long as the information that person provides results in an arrest and conviction.
