Cary Police are asking for your help finding whoever caused a deadly hit-and-run wreck.
It happened Monday afternoon at the intersection of Green Level to Durham Road and Cary Glen Boulevard.
Police say the driver of a tan or beige van hit a Lexus SUV.
Kailee Birdsong, 16, who was riding with her stepmother, was thrown from the SUV and died on the way to the hospital.
She was not wearing a seatbelt.
"My daughter was 16," said Kailee's father, Robby Birdsong. "She had her whole life ahead of her, and she's gone."
Birdsong blames the lack of a stoplight at this intersection; he blames himself for not making Kailee more aware of the importance of seatbelts.
And he blames the other driver.
"There's no closure for me right now because this guy, he's out there and my daughter's dead today because he hit their car," said Birdsong. "And I just don't understand why he left the scene."
Cary police spent much of Tuesday trying to find out who that driver might be, stopping every car in at that intersection to see if anyone might have useful information.
Investigators say the van has a boxy looking back end, and probably has some major scrapes or paint-transfer on the front left bumper.
"If you hear any of your neighbors speak about seeing the accident or maybe have any information, especially about a tan in color, light brown van that may have been involved in the wreck, we would very much appreciate them calling us," said Lt. Randall Rhyne.
Ideally, though, the driver of that van would turn him or herself into police.
"Emotionally, I'm drained right now," said Robby Birdsong. "I have a closure that I can't find."
Kailee's little sister was unharmed in the wreck; her stepmother, Melissa Birdsong, is still at Duke Hospital in fair condition.
Anyone who has information about the vehicle should call (919) 469-4012.
Update, 9 a.m. Wednesday:
Police say they've received several tips that may help them locate the missing van, but have not found it at this point.
Officers will be stopping people at the same intersection again around lunchtime, looking for new information.
