One of Morrisville's oldest homes has been listed with the State Historic Preservation Offices Study List of historic properties. The Study List is a preliminary screening tool for a property before it can be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Pugh House was previously listed on the National Register, but was removed due to its necessary relocation from its original site on Aviation and NC 54 to accommodate the now functioning intersection improvements. Staff worked with the State Historic Preservation Office to find a location that would give it the best chance to be re-listed.
The Town Council approved funds for the relocation of the home in 2007, and the structure was moved in early 2008. This became a community event, with over 100 spectators showing up to watch as the home was carefully moved across a railroad crossing.
"The Town has a limited inventory of historic structures, and we are proud to have saved this significant historic home, reflecting citizens' input and desires to preserve the historic and small town atmosphere expressed in the Town Center planning process," stated Morrisville Planner Ashley Jones. "We look forward to further implementation of the award-winning Town Center Plan."
The Town conducted a lengthy public input process to define a Town Center for Morrisville. Saving the Pugh House was one of the desired outcomes. Volunteers have recently helped with landscaping the grounds, and more renovation work is to come.
After a property is listed on the National Register, there is further potential to be designated a County "historic landmark".
