I'm reaching out to all my friends—if anyone knows a way to contact the President directly (or at least someone close to him) I feel our story needs to be heard. My step-dad Kevin is a member of the United States Air Force who was forced to relocate when BRAC closed General Mitchell Air Reserve Station. He was moved to Pope Airforce Base in North Carolina. He was forced to live with his co-workers and friends for approximately two years while we waited for our house to sell. This put huge emotional strain on my mother and the rest of our family. Our house has been on the market for two years, has gone through three realtors, and now stands empty in Volo, Illinois while the five of us are forced to live in a two bedroom townhouse outside of Raleigh, North Carolina. The Housing Assisstance Program was expanded in May to include "$555 Million devoted to servicemembers forced to sell their homes at a loss due to the country's struggling housing market." But what about those of us who have yet to sell our homes? What about those of us who are paying a $3000 mortgage AND $600 rent and can't afford the college tuition for their two college aged students and are being forced to take out loans they normally wouldn't take. Our application to the HAP has been in since March. We call every day for the status of our application, and the status of the program, and every day we receive a different answer.First it was that the funds had not yet been allocated. Then it was that the funds were available but the guidelines for how to distribute said funds had not yet been given to the program. Then we were told the program only covers those military service men that were injured or died in combatand then again we were told that this was not the caseAnd now, the funds are not available for distribution. When will this end?Of the military men and women that serve this country we are not the only ones in this situation. Many people have sold their homes at a loss, or like us, have yet to sell at all. My family would love for their three children to not have to share a room (hate to say it, 21 year old girl, 18 year old boy, and 12 year old boy in the same room is really NOT OKAY)Will we still be living in our two bedroom townhome at Christmas? What about next summer? How long will we have to endure the financial and emotional strain that this causes everyone. When will we be able to afford the little luxuries like, buying a new pair of pants for work, eating out to dinner with the family, buying that extra bag of chips at the grocery store. When will we have to stop pinching every single penny in order to live. When will the government who has claimed they will help, step in and help?
