The 90,000 pound Seagroves house on Center Street in Apex was moved to its new location, saving the historic home from being torn down.
"It really evokes the Apex of old, the tobacco culture. To lose this house would be a loss to Apex Heritage," President of the Capital Area Preservation Gary Roth said.
Roth said the home was donated to the organization about five years ago, with the intention that that house would be preserved. CAP then sold the property to Bill Cotton with Cotton Custom Homes under strict preservation guidelines. To fulfill this obligation, the first step for Cotton was to move the home away from the road.
"We're moving the whole farm circle to the rear to preserve the original circle," Cotton said
The home was moved about 40 feet and Cotton said this is the original distance the home was away from the street when it was built at the turn of the century.
"I'm excited and talking to Gary about the opportunity to be part of Apex and the history of Apex," Cotton said.
Cotton said he paid about $110,000 for the land and the house but after the renovations are made he is estimating a total investment of $300,000.
Cotton is making the house into office space for his business and expects the project to be completed in six months.
