RALEIGH, N.C.

Why do we decorate Christmas trees with lights?  Where can I see holiday lights in Raleigh? Join the Raleigh City Museum on December 13, from 1:00p.m. to 4:00p.m., and you and your family will learn about the rich history of Christmas and other holiday celebrations in North Carolina.  Local author Ann Fearrington will explore various holiday traditions and share her children's book, Christmas Lights, set right here in Raleigh.  From 2:00p.m. to 3:00p.m. Ann will read Christmas Lights (using slides), taking families on an illustrated tour of their own city that includes the WRAL tower and the Pullen Park train.  Through an exciting lights display families will also learn about Moravian stars, Hispanic luminaries, as well as many other Christmas lights.  If Christmas is not on your calendar, Ann also has something for the Hanukkah and Kwanzaa traditions as well.  Children will also design their own holiday postcard, which they can mail to family and friends!

For one day only you can take a copy of Christmas Lights home with you at a special 50% off holiday discount.  Interested in Ann Fearrington's other books?  The museum store will also carry Who Sees the Lighthouse? at a special holiday discount.  Other items for purchase include The Little Green Book and Christmas Lights posters.  Admission to this program, light refreshments, tasty treats, and special program bookmarks are free!

The Raleigh City Museum is located in the Historic Briggs Building at 220 Fayetteville Street.  The museum is open Tuesday-Friday, 10:00a.m.-4:00p.m. and Saturday, 1:00p.m.-4:00p.m.  Admission to the museum and programs is free. Come check out our newest exhibit, The [R]evolution of Media: The history of newspaper, radio, and television in Raleigh.  Other exhibits include It Started With One Thousand Acres: Raleigh and its People, Raleigh's City Flag: 100 Years, Let Us March On: Raleigh's Journey Towards Civil Rights, and Higher Education in Raleigh: The foundations of a legacy.  Call (919) 832-3775 ext. 11 or visit our website at http://www.raleighcitymuseum.org for more information.
