Wake Tech Announces New Bus Service for Students Capital Area Transit Adds Express Route to Wake Tech
RALEIGH, N.C. (November 20, 2008)—Wake Technical Community College and the City of Raleigh are teaming up to benefit students—and the environment! Thanks to a new agreement with Capital Area Transit (CAT), Wake Tech students will soon be able to ride an express bus from Moore Square in downtown Raleigh to Wake Tech's main campus, at 9101 Fayetteville Road (U.S. 401S). Almost 10,000 students attend classes on the main campus.
The Raleigh City Council approved the arrangement on November 18. The "regional express" route, which will include a park-and-ride stop in Garner, will run hourly between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. every day the college is in session, starting January 5, 2009.
"This is a great partnership, with all kinds of benefits." says Dr. Stephen C. Scott, Wake Tech's president. "Students save money; Wake Tech saves parking space, which is at a premium; and we all save the earth—at least a little—by taking a step that reduces fuel consumption and carbon emissions."
Wake Tech had previously offered service to its main campus through Southern Coach. That service will continue until the holiday break begins on December 22nd. As before, the new CAT route to main campus will be free of charge for Wake Tech students, faculty, and staff. The bus will pick up riders at the Moore Square Station on Blount Street.
CAT also serves other Wake Tech locations on its normal routes, including the Northern Wake Campus on Louisburg Road (U.S. 401N), the Health Sciences Campus on Holston Avenue, and the Adult Education Center on Capital Boulevard. The new agreement enables riders to connect through Moore Square to ride the bus to any of these locations and offers possibilities for a more comprehensive transit program for Wake Tech students in the future.
