Wake County Story

Stormy Day In Carolina Ending, Cold Air Coming

Credit: AP Online
RALEIGH, N.C. -

After a day of stormy weather across North Carolina, residents must now brace for colder temperatures as the weekend approaches.

While most of the NBC 17 viewing area was under a tornado watch during the day Thursday, the only reports of severe weather involved standing water on roads.  North Carolina may have dodged a bullet with the weather because on Wednesday parts of Georgia and South Carolina reported numerous trees down due to damaging winds.

Southerly winds the past few days brought us warm temperatures and moisture which, along with an area of low pressure,  brought Central North Carolina anywhere from one to three inches of rain.  There was enough heavy rain at times to prompt the National Weather Service to issue flood watches and advisories, but they too were canceled by late Thursday.

Now, with the severe weather behind us, attention is to being focused on a passing cold front that will drop the temperatures drastically throughout the afternoon noon Friday, eventually bringing it down to the upper 20s Saturday morning.  Afternoon temperatures both Friday and Saturday will only be in the forties, but we are expecting sunny skies all weekend long.

As we bring to a close 2009, there is a bit of good news; after starting the year with nearly a seven-inch deficit, we look to finish the year with nearly a seven inch surplus.
