The town of Selma hopes to limit the number of rental apartments in residential neighborhoods.
Officials are proposing to amend an ordinance so that people can no longer build duplexes in the residential parts of town.
About 60 percent of the people in Selma rent their homes, according to Planning Director Ryan Simons.
Leaders say the town, and its tax base, would benefit from having more homeowners.
"We feel like that if there is some ownership there, there's going to be an increased level of pride and again it's going to go back and increase the quality of life in the town," Simons said.
The town council will hold a public hearing on the proposal on January 13 at its regular 7 p.m. meeting. It will then take a vote.
