WAKE COUNTY, N.C. -

Wake County parents and students have another chance to comment about the new school reassigment plan that was released Dec. 21.

The Wake County School Board will hold a public hearing Monday, Jan. 5 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Apex High School.

The School Board released its updated reassignment draft plan with a school by school breakdown.

The updated draft removed 1,300 students from the original proposal.  The new proposal still had 25,000 children changing schools over the next three years.

School officials said the reassignment plan addressed the opening of ten new schools.

The proposed plan by the School Board is extremely disillusioning. I have lost faith in the School Board and its ability to understand what it takes to give children a good education. As a parent with 3 children (ages 7, 11 and 13), I admonish the individuals on the School Board for the constant upheaval they single-handedly create and lack of consistency with which they shepherd our educational process. Despite the direct/candid feedback of their consituency, they continue to implement programs (like mandatory bussing of inner-city kids to suburban schools) that have failed in the past. And our children are forced to move to schools several miles from our neighborhood when there are great schools within walking distance. Since the December draft was released, my wife and I are investigating private and charter schools for our children, with the sincere hope that we can leave this incredibly poorly run system. The Wake County School Board underestimates the impact of what it's doing - these decisions will result in middle class and affluent families and influencers leaving the county to find a more stable educational environment. That stability is one of the biggest reasons many of us moved to this area. Now that our kids are unable to go to school in their neighborhood, spend time with in school with the children in their neighborhood, and commute 30-60 minutes away, every advantage has been erased by the School Board - ironic.
