North Carolina's community and technical colleges are dealing with a growing wave of students at a time when the economic slowdown is pinching the schools' budgets.
Many of the students are seeking new skills after losing their jobs in the recession.
A spokeswoman for the state's community college system says enrollment was up in the fall at 49 of North Carolina's 58 community colleges. Spokeswoman Peggy Beach told The News & Observer of Raleigh for a story Saturday that community college enrollment rises 2 percent to 3 percent for every one percentage point increase in unemployment.
North Carolina's unemployment rate in November was 7.9 percent. That marked an increase from 7.1 percent in October and 4.7 percent in November 2007.
