Hundreds of people took advantage Saturday of a chance to get up close with new Gov. Beverly Perdue, during the inauguration's final event.
Perdue opened the governor's mansion to the public, who showed up by the hundreds.
People waited in long lines, some for an hour or two, just to shake hands with Perdue and members of her Council of State.
During the three-hour event, the line waiting to get in the mansion wrapped around the front of the building, a block down Jones Street and then around the corner of Person Street.
"The wait was not important. You get to see people who are just as excited to be here and be a part of this occasion," said Brenda Pollard.
Many people praised Perdue's victory and said they were excited about a chance to meet her.
"I'm just proud to be here today," said Perdue supporter Thelma White.
Others said they wanted to get a glimpse of what Perdue's new home looks like.
"Look inside, and see what it's all about and see where Ms. Perdue's going to live," said Joe O'Shaughnessy.
Perdue's staff said it wasn't clear how many people showed up for the event, but Perdue planned on greeting everyone.
The governor's mansion closed to the public following the event so Perdue could hold a private event for her staff.
