A North Carolina state trooper who rescued a woman from a submerged car last year is being honored with awards from the state Highway Patrol.
The patrol said Trooper R. E. Cannaday would receive two awards Thursday at his office headquarters in Fayetteville. Cannaday was selected for a heroism commendation and the patrol's Samaritan Award.
Cannaday helped the woman on Oct. 14 after he was stopped by witnesses who said her car was overturned in a Harnett County creek. Cannaday went into the creek and reached into the vehicle to keep the woman's head above water until more help arrived.
Patrol commander Col. Walter J. Wilson Jr. said the trooper's action exemplified the patrol's emphasis on service to others.
