BUTNER, N.C.

A North Carolina mental hospital is again in danger of losing federal funding after a patient tried to commit suicide late last month by using a bedsheet to hang herself.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Monday that federal regulators found the staff at Central Regional Hospital failed to act to prevent the suicide attempt, even though the 21-year-old patient told a nurse exactly how she planned to take her life.

Based on the March 5 report released Monday, the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued a finding that indicates the conditions monitored at the facility could pose an immediate threat to patient safety.

Hospital administrators have until March 28 to fix the deficiencies or face the loss of federal Medicaid and Medicare funding totaling $1.2 million a month.
