Spring Lake, N.C.

The weather caused a slow start to the morning for rescuers in Harnett County but they were able to continue the search for six-year old Cazhia McMillian, who apparently fell into the river.

Rescuers have been searching a five mile stretch of the Little River since Tuesday afternoon. On Thursday they had canine units, boats, divers and infrared cameras on scene.

Parents in the neighborhood were there too. They say they're concerned about the safety of the area.

Sharonda McNeil, the mother of 6-year-old Cazhia McMillian, who fell into Little River while playing with a friend, says everything happened so quickly.

"She was playing in the yard and three or four minutes later I looked and they said my baby was in the river," McNeil said.

McNeil warns other parents that their child could get into trouble in the blink of an eye. Marcia Fitty who lives nearby has a 15-month-old daughter. She questions if the neighborhood is right for her because of the open water.

"I actually said to my husband maybe we should move," Fitty said.

Toni Engressett has five children. She said it's challenging to supervise a child every second of the day especially as they grow older.

"You just have to hope and pray that they follow the rules you instill in them," Engressett said.

Engressett and Fitty agree that it's a nice neighborhood but they wish something could be done with the river to make things safer for their kids.

"They should actually do something about it like enclosing it off or something because it's scary," Fitty said.

The parents said this tragedy was a wake up call for the entire neighborhood and until something can be done to improve the safety of the area, they hope parents keep extra close eye on their children.

Rescuers plan to keep divers in the water until dusk but they will keep boats on the scene throughout the night. They will continue the rescue on Friday.

Maybe parents need to stop putting the blame for their ineptness on everything around them. "They should actually do something about it like enclosing it off or something because it's scary," Fitty said. If parents actually paid more attention and spent time with their children, knowing that these dangers are out there, less of this would happen.
