APEX, N.C. -

Farmers across North Carolina are hoping that temperatures expected to dip to the freezing level would not result in the kind of damage that wiped out the 2007 apple and peach crop.

State Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services spokesman Brian Long said Tuesday that strawberry and blueberry growers used either row covers or irrigation to protect plants. Long said peach and apple growers could burn trash to create heat as a means of protection.

In 2007, a four-day cold snap around Easter weekend caused crop and nursery losses estimated at nearly $112 million.

Forecasts from the National Weather Service said while low temperatures Wednesday morning would get down to the 30s, it would only reach that level for one night.

As for gardners, those who procrastinated may have had the right idea.

Lowe's lawn and garden specialist Thomas Dawson said certain plants are sensitive to the cold weather -- especially vegetables. Many plants won't die, but they could lose their flowers, causing them to be useless the rest of the season.

Dawson suggests taking potted plants inside, covering outside vegetation with an old sheet.

"If you already have plants in the ground you should water thoroughly. This helps insulate the plants so gives them a better chance with the roots structure," Dawson said.

It is common for this type of cold weather in April, and Dawson said gardeners must be cautious with their plants.
