North Carolina officials say mentally ill children will be moved from World War II era buildings at a hospital complex into better quarters that are warmer, have better plumbing and fewer bugs.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Thursday that mentally ill children will be housed at a new mental facility about a mile away from the old one or at a hospital in Raleigh.
The state Department of Health and Human Services says the move will improve patient care.
Poor conditions at the former John Umstead hospital in Butner north of Raleigh were detailed in February by the newspaper. After the story was published, residents from around the state called to complain about conditions and Gov. Beverly Perdue visited the facility.
