A new movement is calling for people to support Raleigh's local business owners, especially in these tough economic times.
The Greater Raleigh Merchant's Association has launched an initiative and website called ‘Shop Local Raleigh'. The goal is promote locally-owned, independent businesses and fuel the local economy.
"If you spend money at a local retailer, the money stays in the community," said Doug Diesing, owner of Seaboard Wine Warehouse and a member of SLR. "A lot of times when you go to a big box, that money is mostly going out-of-state to their corporate office."
Holly Aiken, a bag designer and owner of the shop Stitch, said small businesses add to Raleigh's character.
"The small businesses are what make a city unique, and if you don't support them, they won't last," she said.
About seventy businesses have joined the movement. You can learn more about them by searching the website by category of business, keyword, or location.
