The chief state medical examiner says a 43-year-old man who died last year at a North Carolina mental hospital likely died of natural causes.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Monday that Kenneth S. Gore died Oct. 27 at Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro. His death wasn't reported until Jan. 16 after the newspaper asked why the medical examiner had no record of him.
By the time the state pathologists learned of the death, Gore's body had been embalmed and buried. The report didn't address the quality of care Gore received.
The newspaper reported that no autopsy was conducted because the hospital didn't follow a state law requiring that all deaths in a state institution be reported for medical examiner review.
An internal review cleared staff members of wrongdoing.
