The state House has decided to free local telephone companies from state regulations that for decades made sure companies like AT&T justified their prices and kept up service standards.
The House voted 102-11 on Wednesday to release phone companies from rate-setting oversight by the state Utilities Commission.
Supporters said the monopoly positions the companies once enjoyed have been eroded under competition from wireless, Internet and cable television companies that are not regulated. Supporters said market competition rather than regulation will pressure companies to keep prices low and quality high,
Critics said while the companies will benefit, it wasn't clear what consumers got from the bargain.
