North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper said he will not run for the Democratic nomination to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Richard Burr in 2010.
Cooper's announcement Friday eliminates what likely would have been a serious challenge to the single-term incumbent.
Cooper said he wants to stay in office in Raleigh rather than contest the Senate post. He was re-elected to a third four-year term in November.
After three successful statewide campaigns, Cooper was considered to have a strong chance to unseat Burr next year.
Burr is seeking re-election to his Senate seat after winning in 2004. He was previously a congressman from the Winston-Salem area.
