NEW HILL, N.C.

The public alert notification sirens around the Harris Plant will be tested Tuesday, May 19, between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. There are 83 sirens in a 10-mile area surrounding the plant.

This will be a full-volume short duration test that will last approximately five seconds. This test is conducted to make sure each siren works properly. Residents may not hear the sirens unless they are close to one when it is being tested.

Progress Energy conducts silent tests every two weeks and short duration tests every three months. Full-volume testing is conducted annually. The siren tests are conducted in cooperation with the emergency planning offices of the State of North Carolina and Chatham, Harnett, Lee and Wake counties.

Questions about the tests may be directed to county or state emergency management agencies. Media inquiries may be directed to Julia Milstead at Progress Energy, (919) 362-2160.
