The Holly Springs Police Department has seen a rise in domestic violence calls in the past year and Officer Jynnifer Bridges said there's one big reason.
"The economy. A lot of the calls I've gone to have been about money," Bridges said.
Now, dozens of businesses and hundreds of residents have stepped up to donate everything from bottled water to baby supplies, all to help people get out of violent situations.
"It's called Operation Restart, Repair, Renew which is a drive for domestic violence victims," Bridges said.
Stephanie Francis with Interact, a nonprofit that helps those suffering from domestic violence, said they use these supplies to transform their shelters into safe havens for victims.
"Our shelter program is for women and children fleeing from an abusive situation," Francis said.
Amy Cuthbertson is the director of the Holly Springs School of Early Education, a business involved with the drive.
"It's important that everyone gets involved especially as times get hard," Cuthbertson said.
But despite the hard times, businesses say items have been coming in droves.
"We've had an overwhelming response. It's amazing what people are doing," Bridges said.
But they say more donations are always needed as the number of victims coming forward for help continues to grow.
