DURHAM COUNTY, N.C. Bad News: During this recession the Durham Rescue Mission has seen a 7% increase in the number of people coming to the Mission for help; and, at the same time there was a 4% decrease in cash donations. Good News: The number of shoppers at our current thrift store has increased dramatically because everyone is trying to stretch their dollar's buying power. Income from the store is up 39% this year. Recently the Durham Rescue Mission had the opportunity to open another thrift shop in a piece of property that had gone into bankruptcy. This property, located on Hwy 70 at 10701 Glenwood Ave, near T.W. Alexandar Drive, will be used to continue the social enterprises the Rescue Mission is developing to help diversify the income stream that helps fund the non-profit. Following are the benefits of this new store: 1.The store will provide 20 new jobs for graduates of the Rescue Missions programs. During this down economy it has been difficult for graduates to acquire jobs and this will be a wonderful job training opportunity for them. 2.The store will provide opportunities for friends in the Triangle to recycle clothing, furniture and small appliances by dropping them off at the thrift store, 3.The store will also offer residents of the Rescue Mission's Good Samaritan Inn an opportunity to shop for clothing using the vouchers they earn in our programs, & 4.The store will provide a "shop til you drop" experience for Triangle bargain hunters. The Durham Rescue Mission's Bargain Center plans a Grand Opening in July in this 20,000 square foot facility that is climate controlled and has plenty of parking spaces. To stock the new store, the Mission is now accepting donations of gently used clothing, household items, furniture, and small appliances. Donations may be dropped off at the store located at 10701 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh or call 484.9014 to schedule pick up for larger items. All proceeds will be used to help provide the many services the Durham Rescue Mission offers to the hungry, homeless and hurting men, women and children in our area. This is a great opportunity for the Triangle and the Durham Rescue Mission to partner together to mend shattered lives! For more information, visit www.DurhamRescueMission.org
